Michael Boyle is a world-renowned sports coach and is one of the most well-known and respected experts in the fields of strength and conditioning, functional training and general overall fitness. He has some very strong opinions on losing weight and gaining muscle. And because of his strong stance on his views, you have a some who agree with him – while others strongly disagree. But whether a person agrees or disagrees with Michael Boyle, they do have to agree to the fact that everything he states makes some sense and can be validated by their own research.
One opinion of Mike’s is that, toning a person’s body is not a scientific expression; it is a sales gimmick. There is no such thing as toning up. He goes on to state that no one should ever worry about getting too big, too bulky or too “muscley.” It takes a lot to gain muscle mass and it is rare that you would ever have too much muscle mass if you are training naturally.
He declares that we should stop giving the impression that it is possible to get too big. Stating that getting too big is not something that will ever happen to the average person, it is only something that happens to “steroid-athletes” and “it has nothing to do with real life.” Coaches and professional trainers should tell their clients the truth. To build up muscles takes training and lots of hard work.
People need to stop carrying light weights while walking. Those 5 pound, 10 pound, 15 pounds or even 20 pound weights is not going to give a person the results that they want and need. Many women believe that the best way for them to build endurance and strength is by walking with light weights or doing easy activities like gardening, which Michael Boyle clearly reminds us that gardening is not a weight loss activity but a hobby. Sure, it is possible to burn a few calories by gardening, but a person is not going to make any significant health changes with gardening.
Many women also believe that it is unsafe for them to do any significant type of weight training. This is simply not true. Women can lift weights just as much as men can. The key is to not overdue it and gradually build up strength. Do a little at a time, until you can lift a heavier amount of weights and until you do can do for longer periods of time.
In closing, the word toning should be omitted from the English language whenever a person is relating the word to fitness. Instead, a person should always use phrases like increase strength, increase muscle, gain strength and so on.

Michael Boyle is known for being an accomplished strength and conditioning coach for athletes. And he has some beliefs and opinions on topics that not many will agree with. One of his beliefs, on long slow distance running, are particularly interesting.
He states that running long slow distances (LSD for short as Mike likes to put it) is really just a torture method. When you consider what entails to participate in LSD running, it is very easy to see why he believes that. Usually, a person doing long slow distance starts with an hour run three times a week and builds that up to weekly averages of 40 to 50 minutes a week.
Here are just some guidelines of long slow distance running. Although these are not the official guidelines, it is what most adhere to.
- You must run no fewer than three runs per week.
- You must run not more than five runs per week.
- You must run no less than one hour per run.
- You must run no farther than 15 minutes on any run.
- You must run one run per week lasting two hours or more.
Boyle was very accurate when he described long distance running as a method of torture. And other experts like Kurt Wilkens agrees.
Michael Boyle also believes that aerobic training and long slow distance are extremely unhealthy for anyone who is not an athlete. Athletes are specifically trained and have spent years building up the endurance required for long slow distance. Michael Boyle reminds us that most running injuries occur when we overdo it. Which is why running injuries are extremely common when doing long slow distance. It is more effective for a person to run at a normal pace and normal distance than to do the latter.
He also mentions a very interesting study done by researcher and sport scientist Martin Gibala. In his study, Martin Gibala discovered that interval training, steady training, and long slow distance training produced the same aerobic results. So if they produce the same results, then why waste your time doing an LSD training when you can get the same results with interval training in a few short minutes?
And although this study only looked at the aerobic side of the equation. The benefits of weight loss seem to side with interval training as noted from those who have done both. Obviously, as an athlete I would choose interval training. Unless of course I was training for a long distance run.
So really I guess what we can gather from this is that long slow distance is really not an ideal exercise routine for athletes and in fact can be more harmful to the body, because of overuse. Even though it offers the same aerobic benefits as a steady running training. However, it is noted that interval training is not for beginers so the LSD method could help in preparing the average person for the next step up.
Overall, running should never be painful or harmful in anyway. If it does cause you discomfort, stop immediately. And please use your best judgment and consider getting some expert advice before doing anything that may push your body to it’s limits.
